There are several types of vacation rental properties available
to individuals who are interested in renting such a property for their
vacation. The following are types of vacation rentals and a brief description
of each:
- Free-standing private villas - These properties,
in addition to the surrounding grounds, are for the exclusive enjoyment
of the renter. The swimming pool, barbecue pit, and other facilities
are for the private use of the individual(s) who are currently renting
the property. In many cases, the owner of the property lives in a separate
structure somewhere on the grounds, but as a rule he or she is usually
unobtrusive and respects the privacy of their guests. However, if total
privacy is necessary ask your agent for clarification.
- Apartments on a farming estate - Many proprietors
renovate farm structures in order to accommodate vacationers. Most of
these farms produce some kind of product such as wine or oil and can
be found mostly in Italy. Rental units are normally of high quality.
Vacationers share the property with several other groups of vacationing
families, which are scattered all over the farm. If you are traveling
with children, make sure that there are kid-friendly activities to keep
them busy and entertained.
- Apartments in a holiday village – This is a
concept that is unique to Italy. An ancient hamlet that sits on a hilltop
is renovated into a Tuscan-style condo complex. The stone exteriors,
cotto floors, and wood beams are preserved architectural features, but
all the residents are vacationers. Typically there is a tennis court,
a swimming pool, and a friendly, social atmosphere. Most dining terraces
are within view of another dining terrace. These rentals are usually
rather budget-friendly and serve as a good touring base, but will disappoint
individuals who want to experience the “real” Italy while
on their vacation.
- Village houses - Rentals of this type are usually
extremely rare and must be booked way in advance. They can vary from
walled estates to apartments on a small street. Parking is often rather
distant and private dining terraces are non-existent. However, the convenience
of local shops and village life make the small annoyances well worth
the wait.
